“Whatever your ability, this is skiing at its best: extraordinary terrain for the expert, and a wide, sheltered snow bowl for the novice. ”
It is the Alp's best kept secret.
Glorious Grimentz
The village of Grimentz is a beautiful Swiss resort hidden away in the Anniviers valley in the glorious Alps. Grimentz lies at an altitude of 1570 meters but the ski slopes above Bendolla stretch along the Becs de Bosson up to an altitude of almost 3000 metres, affording views over the Val d’Anniviers and Rhone Valley. The village is famous for its black granaries, which perch perilously on top of grindstones some of which date back to the 15th Century. Grimentz has a small local population, intimate restaurants, pristine mountain views and is utterly charming.
Winter
The Val d’Anniviers (Anniviers is derived from the Latin “ad nives” meaning in the snow) offers expert and novice skiers the perfect variety of tree-lined runs. For strong skiers or boarders with a passion for adventure there is a huge area of off-piste to play in. With the same ski pass you can access all the ski resorts in the Val d’ Anniviers (Zinal, St-Luc/Chandolin, Vercorin), covering more than 220km. These four ski areas surround five unspoiled traditional villages set amongst staggeringly beautiful mountains. You are also, as the crow flies only 15 miles away from the spectacular towns of Verbier and Zermatt. Other local winter attractions include a fun park, ice skating, curling, cross-country ski trails, a toboggan run and winter hiking trails.
Summer
There is a pethora of Spring and Summer adventures for walkers, cyclist and drivers in this impressive corner of Switzerland. Discover the rich variety of fauna and flora on unspoilt and varied terrain. Grimentz and the neighbouring village of St. Jean boast more than 100 km of signed mountain bike routes, ranging from an easy beginners’ stretch to the Grand Raid race course. Adrenaline junkies can do the 410-meter long Via Ferrata with a shaky rope bridge and Tyrolienne near the Moiry Reservoir Lake. The Moiry Glacier is one of the most spectacular in the Alps and the Moiry reservoir worth photographing.

Wood, Wine and Local Shopping
There's something particularly cosy about returning from a day in the mountains and lighting a fire. The Coop supermarket in Grimentz sells boxes of firewood, and we've left a sample in the apartment so you know what to look for. The Coop is also a convenient place to stock up on everyday essentials, with a good selection of wines, beers and spirits at reasonable prices. Coop Grimentz / Opening hours: Generally 08:00–19:00, with Sunday opening from 09:00. Please check locally for seasonal variations. One thing worth remembering is that many smaller shops in the valley close for lunch, usually around midday, and may remain closed for a couple of hours.
And while you're shopping, don't miss the opportunity to discover the wines of Valais. The surrounding valley is home to numerous wine producers, from established vineyards to smaller independent winemakers. Local events and tastings offer a wonderful opportunity to discover their wines and enjoy a taste of the region.
Getting Around – Buses and Mountain Shuttles
Grimentz is well connected to the other villages in the Val d'Anniviers, making it surprisingly easy to explore the valley without a car. Local PostBus services connect Grimentz with Vissoie, Zinal, St-Luc and Chandolin. Seasonal shuttle buses (navettes) also operate around the villages and ski areas. During the winter season, many inter-village bus services are free. In summer, the Anniviers Liberté Pass provides free travel on eligible routes.
